Case Study

Jenny, after many years of employment, found herself out of work. Due to the physical nature of her job, Jenny could no longer meet the demands placed on her. But the job wasn’t the only thing that was gone. She lost friends in former colleagues and she also lost the satisfaction that went with doing her job every day.

Being unemployed left Jenny feeling low. It wasn’t just the fact of being out of work, but she also felt that, due to the restrictions of her physical condition, she would never work again.

When Jenny met with an employment consultant at SCI Workforce, she realised that there are other people in the same situation. During the meeting, Jenny and the employment consultant discussed her employment goals and ways to achieve them. This included the preparation of professional résumés, engaging in vocational training and coaching on how to look for jobs.

At the end of this first meeting, Jenny realised that she could again find employment. She has skills and experience wanted by employers.

The longer Jenny worked with SCI Workforce, the more confident she became. Her feeling of self-worth increased.

After three months, Jenny attended her first interview for a position as a call centre operator. While Jenny didn’t get the job, the experience was positive enough for her to believe that she would get the next job she applied for. And so it happened. Six weeks later Jenny was employed as a customer service operator.

It took Jenny five months to find a job and in that time she learnt many things. Most importantly, she learnt to believe in herself again.
