James Kell has worked tirelessly to secure materials for construction of the Sargood Centre. In his teens, James broke his neck in a surfing accident which could have left him paralysed below the neck. Fortunately, James made a full recovery but the impact of that experience remained with him.

After becoming one of our monthly donors, James also agreed to use his considerable skills and experience to obtain Gift-In-Kind materials from the construction industry. The level of commitment from our supporters continues to amaze and humble all of us here at SCI Australia.

In October we said goodbye to two extraordinary super heroes.

The amount of media coverage given to the death of Christopher Reeve is testimony to how his life continued to inspire others after suffering a catastrophic spinal cord injury 10 years ago. As the print media editorialised, "...he was courageous and determined—determined his misfortune would not be the end of his life or engagement with the world."

The death of Brian Newton OAM, on 28th of October didn’t attract the same level of media interest. But, to those of us who knew him, Brian was a "superman" who refused to allow his physical condition to restrain his passion for promoting the welfare of people with disabilities.   When he died, Brian was the Chairman of Spinal Cord Injuries Australia, a position he had held for the past four years. His vision and leadership underpins our revitalised image as well as our ambition to be Australia’s leading service provider in the key areas of PREVENTION (of spinal cord injuries), CARE (of those with serious spinal cord or similar injury) and CURE (funding of research for a cure of spinal cord injury).

Dear Friends

Welcome to our first issue of impact, a newsletter designed to give you insight to how donations make a difference in the lives of the people we serve – people with spinal cord and similar conditions, their carers and the community at large.

My role as CEO connects me with many people and their life stories. Lives thrown into turmoil in a blink of an eye. A car accident. Perhaps a fall at home. Often, it’s a young adult in a sports or recreational mishap. Like a young man I met after a diving accident. In a whirlwind of pain and trauma, a serious spinal injury spun him into a world where even the most basic life function would be an enormous and often heartbreaking challenge. I’ll never forget the look in his eyes as he shared the anguish of not being able to hold his newborn son.
