We know that anyone, anytime could be a carer. But what does this mean?
How does caring affect people; the carers, their families, their communities?
Carers Week is the awareness week held during October each year right across Australia. The event was established to promote and raise awareness of the valuable role that carers play in our community and to generate discussion about carer issues. Carers Week also provides an opportunity for carers to come together, support one another and share ideas and information.
The theme of Carers Week in 2008 will be "… because I care"
The idea of ...because I care is to explore the impact of caring on individuals. It is a progression of the theme of the last two years, anyone, anytime which was essentially about how anyone could become a carer. This new theme takes the next step to help people understand what that actually means for those directly affected.
The Carers Week website, www.carersweek.com.au, will be the interactive hub of the Week. There you will find all the campaign material, such as our television and radio community service announcements and an online message board where you can share your experiences as a carer or read those of others.
Carers Week will officially be launched on 20 October at Old Parliament House, Canberra.
The following day is Carers Day, a national day encouraging the wider community to acknowledge the invaluable contribution carers make. If you have a Carers Day event or activity you would like people to know about- send the details to carersweek@carersaustralia.com.au and we’ll upload them to the Carers Day section of the Carers Week website, our Facebook and Myspace pages.
Events will be held nationally throughout the week to celebrate and bring awareness of Australia’s 2.6 million carers.
