In a split second, life can change forever.

The impact of a spinal cord injury is instantaneous and traumatic.  An individual will live with partial or total paralysis for the rest of their life.

This means dependency on equipment such as wheelchairs, hoists, commodes and a variety of other assistive devices just to undertake simple everyday tasks.  There may also be a need for personal care workers to assist with daily tasks such as showers, eating or grooming.  The impact on family structures and homes is immense and unrelenting.  Daily routines and relationships will change forever.

The expectations that each person has of their life directions will need to be evaluated and, in many cases, completely redefined.

At present the rehabilitation process focuses on health issues only and cannot cope with the additional social, relationship and emotional wellbeing aspects of transition.  The Sargood Centre will offer comprehensive support needed to enable a person with a spinal cord injury, and their family, to remain active and productive within their community.
